eSIM Troubleshooting: Fix Common Issues in Minutes

Solve the most frequent eSIM problems. Activation failures, slow speeds, data not working? This guide covers everything you need to fix it fast.

Quick Fixes Before Troubleshooting

Before diving into specific issues, try these universal quick fixes — they resolve the majority of eSIM problems in under a minute:

  • Restart your phone — This refreshes the network connection and often fixes data issues
  • Toggle airplane mode — Turn on airplane mode for 10 seconds, then turn it off to force a network reconnection
  • Check Data Roaming — Make sure Data Roaming is turned ON in your cellular settings (this is the most common cause of no data abroad)
  • Remove and re-add the plan — Go to Settings → Cellular → eSIM plan and remove it, then re-scan your QR code from your email

eSIM Activation Failures

If your eSIM won’t activate, the most common causes and solutions are:

  • Wi-Fi required for activation: Some eSIM providers require a Wi-Fi connection to download the carrier profile. Make sure you’re connected to stable Wi-Fi before scanning.
  • Device already has maximum eSIMs: Some devices limit the number of eSIM profiles. You may need to remove an old/unused eSIM first.
  • QR code expired or used: QR codes are typically single-use. If yours has been used before, contact support for a replacement.
  • Wrong QR code for your device: iPhone and Android QR codes are sometimes different. Make sure you’re scanning the correct QR code type.

No Data Connection After Activation

  • Data Roaming is OFF: Go to Settings → Cellular → Data Roaming (iPhone) or Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile Network → Roaming (Android) and turn it ON. This is required to use data abroad.
  • eSIM not set as data line: Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data (iPhone) or Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (Android) and ensure your eSIM is selected as the data line.
  • Out of data / plan expired: Check your account dashboard to verify your plan is still active and has remaining data. If you’ve exceeded your limit, top up your data.
  • Network congestion in area: Try moving to a different location — if you’re in a hotel, basement, or crowded area, signal may be weak. Move near a window or outdoors.
  • APN settings incorrect: Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Cellular Data Network (iPhone) and reset to default. On Android, look for Reset settings in SIM settings.

Slow Data Speeds

If your eSIM data is working but slow, several factors could be at play:

  • Network congestion: Peak travel times and crowded areas (airports, tourist sites) can slow speeds significantly. Move to a less crowded area.
  • 4G vs 5G: If you’re on a 4G plan in an area with 5G coverage, you won’t get 5G speeds. Check your plan details.
  • Plan throttling: Some budget plans throttle speeds after a certain threshold. Check your plan’s fair use policy.
  • Weak signal: If your device shows only 1-2 signal bars, speeds will be slow. Move to a location with better coverage.
  • VPN active: Some VPNs significantly slow down your connection. Try disconnecting the VPN.

How to Check if Your Device Detects the eSIM

If your device doesn’t recognize the eSIM at all, there are several troubleshooting steps to try. First, go to Settings → About Phone → SIM Status (Android) or Settings → General → About → SIM Status (iPhone) to check if the eSIM is being detected at all. If the eSIM is detected but shows as ‘Invalid’, try removing it and re-adding it. If the eSIM doesn’t appear in settings at all, your device may not support eSIM or may have a hardware issue. In this case, contact TailSim support for a replacement QR code and further troubleshooting.

How to Remove and Reinstall Your eSIM

Sometimes the cleanest fix is to start fresh. On iPhone: go to Settings → Cellular → select your eSIM → Remove Cellular Plan. Then re-scan your QR code from your purchase email. On Android: go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → select your eSIM → Remove SIM. Then re-scan the QR code. Note: removing the eSIM does not cancel your plan or your remaining data — it only removes the profile from this device. You can re-add it at any time with the same QR code.
